A mother’s body is an amazing thing; women who are not currently lactating or pregnant can produce milk to feed their babies even if they have not been pregnant through induced lactation and re-lactation.
Induced lactation is a process where a woman who either has never been pregnant or has not been pregnant in a while, wishes to make milk to feed a baby. This is usually done during the adoption process. This process is time-consuming and may require hormones to simulate pregnancy. We recommend that mothers who wish to induce lactation reach out to us as early as possible, as this process may take several months.
Re-Lactation occurs when a mother who has had a baby in the last few months but is not breastfeeding, wants to begin breastfeeding her infant. While this isn’t easy, it is relatively successful for most women. Contrary to popular beliefs, the breastfeeding relationship is not an “all or nothing” relationship. If you stopped breastfeeding before you wanted to, or if you never breastfed but now you have changed your mind, our team of experts can help you achieve your goals.

Fathers and families are very important to a successful breastfeeding journey. A new baby can add many new responsibilities and emotions to a family. For a new mother, support from the baby’s father and other family members, especially where breastfeeding is concerned, will help the mother reach her breastfeeding goals more than anything else.
Sometimes, fathers and other family members report feeling “left out” when a mother breastfeeds. This doesn’t have to happen. There are many ways for fathers or partners to love their babies and also help the new mother. At Mother’s Helper Lactation Clinic, we offer prenatal breastfeeding classes to expectant parents, and family members and other support persons are also welcome to attend. We can help the family understand the importance of breastfeeding and how to help support the mother’s breastfeeding goals, while also allowing others to love and care for the breastfeeds baby.

After the baby arrives, we also offer classes to teach parents the bonding and nurturing touch of infant massage, taught by our own Certified Educator of Infant Massage. The educator will demonstrate techniques using a life-sized doll and parents will practice using their own infants. These classes are designed for new parents to explore ways to promote safe and nurturing touch with their children, which studies have proven beneficial in a child’s development. Massage classes are one hour each, for five weeks, teaching new strokes with each class. Infant massage can also be adapted for older children as they grow.
